Taste of Shanghai, World Square

When you are forced to sit in a class room for around 7 hours with barely any breaks in World Square, the one thing I was craving so bad was Shanghainese food . . . so where else would I have gone for lunch besides 'Taste of Shanghai'. By the time we arrived, the restaurant was packed so we had to wait for approx. 15 minutes. However, because we had pre-ordered by the time we sat down, the food came out relatively fast!
Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Bun - $9.80

Traditional Shanghainese Noodles - $12.80
Vegetable and Pork Wonton Soup - $9.80
Chicken Fillet Fried Rice - Friday Lunch Special, approx $7?
Steamed Vegetable Dumplings - $10.80
Shallot pancake - $4.80
Pan Fried Pork Dumpling - $9.80

Shanghai Pan Fried Pork Bun - $9.80
Overall, the food was fairly up to standard with most other Shanghainese restaurants in Ashfield. Their dumplings, buns and pancakes tasted pretty much the same as most other restaurants. The wonton soup and the steamed vegetable dumplings however were a let down. The wontons tasted very very ordinary but I guess I should never compare them with the ones from Hong Kong!

The steamed vegetable dumplings were very dry. The skin of the dumpling was dry and the vegetables didn't seem to have any juices within them. There was barely any flavour besides msg which was quite dissapointing.

The chicken fillet fried was surprisingly quite nice. They had put in the right amount of egg which elevated the flavours of the fried rice to an extra level! The chicken fillet wasn't too dry which was surprising and went really well with the fried rice. The only thing which I would comment on though would be that is was quite oily. The rice was really shiny from the oil which was a bit sickening if you thought about the amount of oil within that dish.

When it came to paying the bill, I had expected to pay AT LEAST over $15 and close to $20. To my surprise however, when the bill was shared between 6 people, it turned out to be $12 per person! What a bargain! So I would suggest for those would have not yet been to try to pop by for lunch as it was will definately satisfy those dumpling cravings!
